About Welding Fixtures
Welding fixtures hold components of a sub assembly for the purpose of welding them together. To join them successfully, each component must be positioned and held firmly in place during the weld process and this must be done, reliably, again and again.
The best weld fixtures are designed taking into account:
  • Materials being joined in the weld process
  • Type of part loading / unloading required (automatic vs. manual)
  • Final part measurement requirements
  • Desired method of production (short run vs. long run)
Welding Fixtures are used for applications requiring:
  • Spot Welding
  • MIG Welding
  • Projection Welding
  • Laser Welding
  • MAG Welding
  • TIG Welding
  • Plasma Welding
Positional Accuracy
The main function of a welding fixture is to hold components of a sub assembly for the purpose of welding them together. Accurate positioning is critical to the success of the weld and the quality of the final part.

PECo fixtures control the accuracy of the parts' positions through the use of datum pins and rest pads that are checked to an accuracy of 0.025mm (0.00098 inches) on our CMM inspection equipment. The datum pins and rest pads are then fixed in position to prevent unexpected movement during use. Positional accuracy helps ensure your six sigma requirements are met and you receive product that consistently matches your design.

Adjustability
Material changes, design changes, and fluctuating production conditions affect your finished product. To ensure your fixtures remain usable and continue to produce quality parts they must be able to accommodate these changes.

PECo fixtures are designed to meet this need through the use of shims that can be locked into place on each of the contact clamps. The use of shim packs allows you to adjust your weld fixture when you need to and, by using PECo's standard multi fastener method, you have the assurance your parts will not move during the weld process.

Process Control
Ensuring the presence and accurate positioning of all required components eliminates the potential for scrap and downtime caused by parts being welded together incorrectly. PECo uses sensors to provide positive feedback to the control system in order to ensure the presence and proper positioning of the parts to be welded. Each fixture is also Poke Yoked to eliminate the possibility of operator error.

Quick Change Capability
PECo welding fixtures can be designed to allow for quick changeovers to accommodate short run production environments. Quick disconnects are placed on the main power and air lines and lifting eyes are built into the fixture to allow production changes in minutes - increasing your overall production time, reducing your labor costs, and allowing you to optimize your production process.

Spatter Proofing
PECo's jigs and fixtures are designed to minimize the effects of weld spatter and increase your uptime. Weld spatter can wreak havoc on production. Spatter can build up on surfaces preventing positive part location or burn through hoses and electrical wires bringing production to a halt.

PECo uses air tube covers, metal seal-tite for electrical lines, and soft nose proximity sensor guards to shield key components in order to prevent these problems. PECo also elevates the plumbing causing weld spatter to roll off thus preventing spatter build up and burn through. These preventive measures increase the longevity of the fixtures, maximize uptime, and reduce maintenance costs.

Adjustable Clamping Force
PECo designs our welding fixtures so that the force of each clamp can be adjusted individually. This is accomplished by changing the air pressure applied to each clamping point. Effective part contact helps to minimize weld spatter and ensure quality.

3D Design Software
PECo utilizes SolidWorks, Cosmos, and AutoCAD to provide a more accurate, simpler, and less costly design. Utilizing 3D design minimizes dimensional and interference mistakes often associated with 2D design. This more accurate design reduces manufacturing time and enables you a faster time to market.

Sofware Simulation Package
PECo uses software simulation packages in conjunction with our 3D design software to help verify design quality. By using software simulation to illustrate the actual movements of the loading, unloading, and welding processes, PECo's design team ensures that clearances for weld guns, parts and assemblies, arms, pins, nut welds, etc. are all met and any interferences are avoided. This process shortens manufacturing time and enables you a faster time to market.

Quality
PECo designs and builds our weld fixtures to stand up to the demands of a production-intensive lifecycle and helps you maintain compliance with your Six Sigma requirements.
